What Does Neurodivergence Mean in Sport?

Neurodivergence refers to natural variations in how people think, learn, and process information – including ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and dyspraxia. These are not deficits; they are part of the rich spectrum of human diversity. In sport, neurodivergent athletes bring unique qualities such as hyperfocus, creativity, energy, and attention to detail. These traits can provide not only a competitive edge but also fresh perspectives on training and teamwork.

Famous Neurodivergent Athletes Who Inspire

Many elite athletes attribute their success to their neurodivergence. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps credits his ADHD with giving him the intense focus and drive needed to succeed in the pool. Tennis player Jenson Brooksby has spoken about how his autism enhances his concentration during matches.

These examples show that neurodivergence can fuel world-class performance when athletes are supported with the right environments and coaching approaches.

The Barriers Neurodivergent Athletes Face

Despite these strengths, many sporting environments remain rooted in rigid, high-pressure systems that do not accommodate diverse needs. Athletes are often expected to self-advocate for adjustments – something especially difficult for those newly diagnosed.

Research highlights that structural barriers and cultural biases, particularly in Western and male-dominated sport, have restricted understanding of how neurodivergence affects athletes across cultures and identities (Kowalski & Fraser-Thomas, 2022). Without systemic change, many athletes risk being overlooked, misunderstood, or excluded.

Simple Changes That Make a Big Difference

Coaches and clubs can take small meaningful steps to create inclusive sporting environments, such as:

– Clear communication – giving clear instructions step by step and avoiding unnecessary jargon.
– Sensory supports – allowing tools like noise-canceling headphones or sunglasses during training.
– Flexible routines – adjusting schedules to reduce overwhelm and improve consistency.

These accommodations not only benefit neurodivergent athletes but also enhance the experience for everyone on the team. Universal design principles—structuring practices, feedback, and expectations with all types of learners in mind—make sport more resilient and adaptive (Goodley et al., 2023).

Building Inclusive Sport for All

To make sport truly inclusive, we must shift from asking athletes to “fit in” toward redesigning systems that welcome all minds. By embracing the full spectrum of neurodivergent strengths, sport can become more innovative, equitable, and ultimately more human.
